How we choose

Racket & Rally does not run a physical test lab. Our picks come from manufacturer specifications, published playtester reviews from established outlets, and the spec patterns that suit each skill level — all set against the criteria below. Where reviewers disagree, we say so. We tell you what we cannot verify rather than filling the gap.

That is a weaker claim than "we tested 40 rackets for six months", and it has one advantage over it: it is true, and you can audit it. Every specification on this site is quoted from a page listed in the sources block at the foot of that page.

1. Level fit

The first filter. Every product is assessed against the spec bands that suit beginner, intermediate and advanced play, and the reasoning is shown rather than asserted. For rackets that means head size, strung weight, swingweight, balance and stiffness; for shoes it means lateral stability, outsole pattern and fit; for paddles it means core thickness, face material and handle length.

A product that is excellent for one level is frequently wrong for another, and we will say which. The bands themselves are defined on our skill levels page.

2. Current availability

Every product named on this site was verified as currently sold at the time of writing, against a retailer or manufacturer listing that we actually retrieved. Racquet model lines turn over annually, so we date-stamp what we check and we remove discontinued models rather than leaving them to rot at the top of a page.

If you find a link to something that is no longer sold, that is a fault and we would like to hear about it.

3. Source quality

We rank sources in this order: the manufacturer's own published specification, a named specialist retailer's product listing, and a named review outlet with a stated measurement method. Forum posts and marketplace reviews are labeled as such where we use them at all.

Where a third party has actually measured something — RunRepeat cuts shoes in half and reports outsole hardness, torsional rigidity and stack heights — we cite the measurement and name the outlet in the visible text, not just in a hyperlink. We cite their measurement, then draw our own conclusion from it. We never copy someone else's ranking.

4. Disagreement handling

Credible reviewers frequently disagree, particularly about feel. When they do, we state both positions rather than picking the one that suits our conclusion. If a frame is widely praised for comfort and widely criticized for a low control ceiling, you should read both on the same page.

5. Independence

No brand pays for placement here. No ranking is for sale. No manufacturer reviews a page before it publishes. We are funded by affiliate commission — explained in full on our affiliate disclosure page — and where the cheaper option is the better buy for the reader, that is the one we rank first, regardless of what it pays.

6. What we do not do

• No lab testing. We do not own a swingweight machine, a stringing robot or an abrasion rig, and we never imply otherwise.
• No first-hand testing claims. You will not find "in our testing", "our playtesters" or "after 40 hours on court" anywhere on this site.
• No fabricated prices. There is no live price feed here, so no page prints a number. Every buy link goes to the current listing.
• No invented ratings or review counts. The scores on our roundups are our own editorial assessment against the criteria above, clearly labeled as ours. They are never presented as customer ratings.
• No testimonials. We do not publish reader quotes, because we have no way to verify them.
• No invented credentials. Janet H. is the owner and editor of this site. No coaching qualification, playing rating or certification is claimed, because none has been established.

How the scores work

Each roundup scores its picks on a fixed set of criteria for that category, out of 10. The criteria are the same on every page in a category, so a control score of 9.5 means the same thing on a beginner page as on an advanced one.

These are editorial judgments derived from published specifications and cited measurement — not measurements of our own and not aggregated user ratings. For that reason they appear as visible page content and are deliberately never emitted as review-rating structured data.
